I never wanted to move to California when I was young. Unlike so many others, I wasn’t wooed by the hallmarks of the state; the Hollywood sign and the Golden Gate Bridge held no appeal. When I visited once in high school, it was to the desert, which – though I can appreciate it now – seemed like nowhere I wanted to be.

But. Then I did move here. And I’ve never been the same.

When I came out here at 23, I discovered the redwoods. And the rivers. And the North Coast, where I’ve now lived for almost four years. I got it, then, why people dream of living in this incredible state.

This past weekend, in Tahoe, I found another angle of natural beauty while on a backcountry snowshoeing trip with friends. I’d never been snowshoeing; didn’t know what to expect. It turned out to be something of a dream – one that, like so much in this Golden State, I didn’t even know I had yet to imagine.

Can’t wait to discover what else California has in store.
