Despite occasionally coming up with awesome status updates (Downloading ‘We Are the World’ is the best decision I’ve made in a long time. ‘Greatest Love of All’ is up next!), I don’t post on Facebook very often.
I don’t like the Facebook world to know much about me, and I don’t like the idea of contributing to the pretend world fabricated by the constant stream of Pollyanna imagery (to combat this, in fact, I occasionally post bad-news updates, just to keep it real: Just spent the first 30 minutes of work getting bird shit out of my hair. Thanks for the help, Beth!).
If I was someone who liked to post a lot, though, I’d have to write about this weekend. It was a great one. So in chronological order, here are 10 of my favorite moments from the past few days:
#1 – Friday, 5:30 p.m.: Just played a rollicking game of kickball with a big group of colleagues that I really, really like. Wore awesome red headband. Though fumbled the ball – a lot, embarrassingly – on my first big play, managed to score a run. Happy enough to cartwheel in the field; hoping no one caught that on camera. Nachos and a beer to celebrate the win.
#2 – Saturday, 3:30 a.m. – 5:20 a.m.: Too early to be awake, but getting up to watch the lunar eclipse was perhaps the best decision since the recent ‘We Are the World’ download. Incredible red, full moon. Drove to the ocean to see it hanging above the water; felt a sweet sense of community with dozen or so others who were there.
#3 – Saturday, 11:30 a.m.: Fantastic run at the edge of the Pacific, wearing new running skirt that makes me feel like I am channeling my speedy friend Sharon. Good thing I took that two-hour nap after the eclipse.
#4 – Saturday, 4:00 p.m.: Met friends at the beach to celebrate a birthday; chatted and hugged and was reminded all over again how amazing those people, who I’ve known for about 13 years, are. Miss them more acutely for having seen them. I also wonder why I don’t have a fire at the beach every day.
#5 – Saturday, 9:00 p.m.: Why didn’t I know that the Fast and the Furious movies were so fun? Admittedly laughed out loud at the scene with Vin Diesel’s character getting married (spoiler alert?!) in a white, ribbed tank top. Also, admittedly cried at Paul Walker tribute; I am not made of stone.
#6 – Sunday, 7:20 a.m.: Slept at the farm last night and woke to pouring rain, which California desperately needs! That place might be my favorite spot on earth…or at least in the top three.
#7 – Sunday, 11:00 a.m.: Oh my good god, just had the best breakfast. Homemade english muffins topped with fresh eggs (what, we need more? To the chicken coop we go!), and homemade hollandaise sauce. Farm-roasted coffee. Fruit salad with crème fraiche. Farm-grown asparagus. Sautéed beet greens. Yum, yum, yum. Couldn’t eat another bite.
#8 – Sunday, 12:00 p.m.: Ok, turns out I was wrong about not eating another bite. Did not expect to love the homemade apple fritters so much. Couldn’t choose favorite between lemon-glazed and cinnamon-sugar-topped, so I combined both; I may officially be a genius.
#9 – Sunday, afternoonish: Texting fun with family, including photos of my favorite little guy. Yay!
#10 – Sunday, 7:45 p.m.: The sun just went down, and we were there to see it, sitting in the Jeep with a mixing bowl of salad shared between us for dinner. Jazz on the radio. No iPhones to document it in sight. Searched for whales. Found faces in the clouds. Sigh.
All in all? It might have been one of my favorite Easter weekends since I was a kid, running around in pink frills under the watchful gaze of my four pastel-bedecked grandparents. No doubt that back then, searching for hidden eggs in the backyard, my two slightly-slower siblings close behind, would have warranted a status update – except that those days, like this weekend, actually deserved so much more.
